which smartphone will u recommend, zopo zp100, star b79m or lenovo A750? your advice will be happily be appreciated.tnx

    1. Hi Mody! If I were you, I will choose only between Zopo ZP100 and Lenovo A750. Lenovo has the advantage of a reliable brand name. ZP100 has slightly better camera features because it’s camera is reportedly made by Sony and has a flash while A750 has none. A750 has better battery with 2000mAh while ZP100 has a 1650mAh battery. I have uploaded videos of both phones in their review pages. Check my reviews on these phones: Lenovo A750 and Zopo ZP100. I hope it would help your decision.

Hello Chris, congratulations on the blog. It is very useful to those interested in dual sim smartphone low cost (low-end)!
Aside from performance … My concern is about the quality of the materials in the construction of dual sim smartphone (especially in durability and resistance). In your opinion which is being the best manufacturer?
And what is the manufacturer of Jiayu G2? It has great tradition in smartphones?
    Thank you!
    I have a great weekend.

Hi Gil! The best cellphone manufacturers in China are Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, and Meizu. These are the ones that are well-established. But there are a couple of new companies that show a lot of potential. These are ZOPO and ThL. I have read a lot of good feedback about their phones. Plus, they have good after-sales support. They provide their customers with software updates for their phones.
Regarding Jiayu G2, I still have not found enough information about the company that manufactured it. It is a new company. So I will not comment on the quality of their phones for now. But I will post my feedback on Jiayu once I learn more. I am also planning to buy Jiayu G2 but I want to make sure first that it is worth my money. For now, I will recommend to you the following dual SIM phones: ZOPO ZP100, ZOPO ZP200, Lenovo A750, ThL V9, ThL W1 and ZTE U960.
    Best regards,

    Hello Kris Amora,
    Who makes THL?
    Who makes ZOPO?
Following their precious suggestion researched who makes the dual sim smartphone (low end) of brands THL and ZOPO …
The more consistent information that the Mobile-Barn manufactures the two brands of appliances. This information is correct?

    Company Name: Mobile-Barn Corporation Limited
Company Address: Room 6k20, Building 3, Sun Tech Park, Shenzhen …
    City / Town: Shenzhen

    Thank you,

    1. Hi Gil!

I did some research about ZOPO and ThL. I found out that both of these companies are considered “Technology Companies” wherein they possess a particular technology (design, architecture) of a phone and they hire Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to build their phones. They do not have a factory of their own. They rely on these manufacturers to make their gadgets, but the design and specifications are made by these Technology Companies. An example of their manufacturers is Mobile-Barn Corporation. Mobile-Barn makes different phone models for different “Technology Companies”.

It is hard to judge whether their manufacturers use high quality materials. For this, we will have to rely on customer feedbacks. And for ZOPO and ThL, they have positive ratings from consumers. You can search for customer feedbacks on the different Android forums for this.

A good thing about ZOPO and ThL is that they have good after-sales support. They constantly develop software updates of their phones. This is what other Chinese Technology Companies lack.

It is also important to note that Huawei was one of these original equipment manufacturers. They were known to build mobile phones and other gadgets for other companies. Eventually, Huawei decided to design their own gadgets and use their brand name. Today, Huawei is one of the leading smartphone brands in the market. So, we can say that some OEMs build gadgets with high quality materials and strict quality control. And ZOPO and ThL may have contracted a good manufacturer for their phones because of the high approval ratings of customers. That, of course, is just my speculation.

      Best Regards,

    2. Hi! I just found out the manufacturer for Jiayu G2. It is called Shenzhen Jiayuyutong Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. This is their official website: But it is in Chinese. Just translate the page so you can read some of the information. Apparently, they have their own factory. So they don’t rely on other manufacturers to build their phones. This is Jiayu’s advantage over other companies that do not manufacture their own phones.

      Best Regards,

I found the X825A cell phone to sell, but it very difficult (impossible is the most accurate word) to find a review on this phone. It’s seems to be a very good phone on the paper with a good ratio quality/price. Do you heard about it and do you know why there is so few information on this product?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi! I have not heard of X825A. But when I searched it on the web, I found out that it has a similar appearance and specifications with IHTC Titan X310E. It may be because X825A has no brand name. It is a generic phone made by an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). It is produced by the same factory that made the IHTC Titan X310E.

UPDATE: I think this what you are referring to: ZeonTouch Titan X825A.

    Hello Chris.

I want to know if the phone JIAYU G2 ICS 4 supports the Hebrew language.
If not then I want your opinion about Phone as support.
It is important to me to have a memory 1RAM and good battery.
    Thank you

    1. Hi! Hebrew language may not be supported by Jiayu G2. You can ask Fastcardtech about this because they have the complete technical details of the phone. If you want a phone with 1GB RAM that supports Hebrew language and has a good battery, click the following: ThL W1 and ThL W3.

Second of all I want to know why the screens of the Chinese instruments are 260K.
Third All Is THL W3 should receive updated ics 4?

A final question which is better thl w3 or zopo zp300?

        1. You’re welcome! Some Chinese smartphones have screens with 260K colors because it is cheaper. But some have 16 million colors.

I don’t know if the ThL W3 will have an ICS update. It would depend on ThL’s manufacturer. You can check out their official website here:

I would choose ZOPO ZP300 for now because I have read a lot of good comments about the phone. ThL W3 is relatively new and I have not seen comments of it yet. But I think it has a lot of potential.

What do you think about ZeonTouch Titan X825a ?
        supports the Hebrew language?

        1. I also think ZeonTouch Titan X825A does not support Hebrew language. To be sure, please ask Fastcardtech. As of now, the only 1GB RAM phones that I know of that support Hebrew are ThL W1 and ThL W3.

I only have another question whether the software more local 2 Help me run
Hebrew in a Chinese phone with ics4?

          1. Most of the phones featured here are easily customized. Android 4.0 ICS supports custom ROMs if the phone is rooted. Fastcardtech roots certain phone models at the customer’s request while other phones are advertised as rooted. I think some people have developed ROMs with Hebrew support for Android 4.0. You can search it on Google.

    Hi Kris,
do you know something about a china smartphone called ARCAPEL AS1+? It’s becoming quiete popular here in Italy. They say that it has a dual core 3D processor (I don’t believe so), 4″ LG screen, ICS and 5Mpxl camera. Price is around 200-220 USD. Can you check it out and let me know what you think?
Fastcardtech is selling the ARCAPEL AS1 (no +) that menas no ICS and 16 Gb Memory max (instead of 32)

    1. Hello Sergio,
I believe Arcapel AS1+ is not dual core. It has the MT6573 650MHz single core CPU with a 400MHz GPU. Some Chinese manufacturers advertise their phones with the MT6573 CPU+GPU as dual core which is not accurate. However, I can tell you that the MT6573 is fast for a 650MHz chip especially when combined with its GPU. But a newer CPU which is MT6575 is available so it makes the MT6573 outdated. The MT6575 is 1GHz, so I highly recommend you find a phone with this CPU. Also, the RAM of the Arcapel AS1+ is suspect. I think it’s only 256MB. I also have doubts that it is a 3D phone. The price of 200-220 USD is too expensive for an MT6573 phone.

I would recommend that you buy a phone with these specs: 1GHz MT6575 CPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB ROM and Android 4.0 ICS. I just bought a Jiayu G2 from Fastcardtech because it has these specs and it costs only 168 USD. I have just received the phone and I’m very impressed by it. I also recommend the real 3D phones like ZOPO ZP200 or Hero H6000. If you want HD phones, try ZOPO ZP300 Field or ThL W3.

Thank you Kris. I do agree with you: it is a suspect phone. They say “3D dual core processor” but NEVER mentioned it clearly. Fastcardtech is the only website where I could get the name of the processor, which should be, as you said, the MT6573. Moreover, 256 Mb RAM seems poor for this kind of smartphone.
I think I’ll follow your suggestion about the Jiayu G2, it looks great. Let me ask you: what about the case? Is it strong and well-defined? The touch? Fast ad sensitive?
Last question: fastcardtech is a respectable company? Have you ever had any problem with them? I see that they accept PAYPAL, that makes the transaction much safer.
Thank you very much, you blog is great.

        1. The case of the Jiayu G2 is good and well-designed. The back cover is made of plastic. It also has a free protective case and screen guard. I’ve had this phone for 3 days now and I can say that this is an amazing smartphone. Touch is sensitive and navigation does not lag. Internet browsing is fast. It also plays 3D games smoothly. I definitely recommended this phone.

Fastcardtech is a reliable online shop. They have been selling goods online since 2005. I ordered my Jiayu G2 from them and there were no problems. Their customer service agents may not have perfect English skills but you can communicate well with them. They communicate with you through e-mail or chat. They also provide you an online tracking number for your order or package.

I chose to pay through Western Union because they give 3% discount if you use Western Union or Moneygram, but you have to email them your payment details after paying. They also ship out orders paid through this method faster than if you pay through the other methods. Then I chose EMS and I received my package around 1 week or so after ordering. But if you want a faster delivery, you can choose DHL, although it is more expensive.

Thank you very much for visiting my site! Feel free to ask me if you have more questions.

Kris, I was really going to order the Jiayu from fastcardtech then I saw your post about the brand new dual core processor MT 6577. Do you think I have to wait? GPU will be the same of the one installed on Jiayu (PowerVRTM SGX Series5); I wonder if the dual core processor will maka a so big difference from the MT 6575. I also think that the price will be a little higher.
    What’s your opinion about that?

    1. I think MT6577 would have a slight advantage regarding efficiency. It would be able to handle high resolution screens better. Well, there is no feedback about those phones yet so I really can’t say for sure. I believe they will have the same GPU as the Jiayu G2, which is PowerVR SGX531. Some people have doubts that the SGX531 would be suitable for a dual core CPU. I guess we’ll find out soon.

You can wait for the dual core phones to come out but expect them to be initially priced at more than $200. The MT6577 phone CarPad Note5 F6 costs $239 at Fastcardtech, which is available for pre-order. If you don’t need a new phone immediately, I think waiting would be a good idea. But once the MT6577 phones come out, another upgrade of the chip (maybe MT6579?) would be announced. You might end up not buying anything at all and constantly waiting! Lol! =)

Anyway, if you decide to buy Jiayu G2, it would still be a great deal. Right now it’s priced at $162. I can’t think of any phone with Jiayu G2’s specs with the same price range. I’m definitely satisfied with this phone. I’ll be hanging on to this until a low-cost quad core phone comes out. Good luck on your decision!

Could you give me your feedback about THL W1 and x825A phones please? which one is the best?

    Thanks again

    1. Hello David!
The ThL W1 and X825A have almost similar specs. The major difference would be the battery. X825A’s battery is slightly better with 1600 mAh while ThL W1’s is 1550 mAh. However, ThL has a good reputation for the quality of its smartphones. While for X825A, I don’t know any information about its manufacturer.

Hi Kris, congrats on your site. It is very informative. I would like to ask if you can kindly review the Lenovo P700 dual sim phone? another question is, do you think the quality of this phone will be good?
also this phone comes with android 4.0, my question is, do you think the android 4.0 of Lenovo will be have many problems and bugs or not?

    thank you.

    1. Thanks for your comment! Lenovo is one of the more established phone manufacturers in China, so I think the P700 has good quality. From the information I have gathered, Lenovo P700 seems like a good phone. It has a 1GHz MT6575 processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB ROM. But I would suggest you get a phone with 1GB RAM. The double amount of RAM is useful especially with Android 4.0 ICS. I don’t know the quality of the P700’s 5.0 megapixel camera but one thing that turns me off is the lack of a camera flash. It may not be suitable for dim light conditions. For its operating system, I think it won’t have problems since Android 4.0 is pretty stable.

All these are just my opinions based on the phone’s specs. I’m sorry I cannot be more detailed since I have not tried the P700. I hope this helps though.

Your blog is awesome. Youre like the crusader for best bang for the buck, cheap china phones for mere mortals like myself. What do you think of the Star x26i? Im torn between it and the Jaiyu G2. Is the 13 usd worth it for the extra half gb or ram alone? And what is the difference between the screen quality, as the g2’s is said to be IPS but the x261 doesnt say the same? Thanks a tone dude!

    1. Hi! Thanks for your comment! Star X26i is good but Jiayu G2 is definitely better. The 1 GB RAM is better suited to run android 4 ICS. Plus Jiayu G2’s screen is great since it is IPS, while I doubt that X26i has IPS scren. With it I can view my screen clearly at different angles and under the direct sunlight. With that and more, it’s definitely worth the extra few dollars. I would recommend Jiayu G2, since I have a great experience with this phone.

I see. Whats the battery life for the G2? The x26i says it has like 2000mah+. And does the G2 come pre rooted? Any available custom roms or rooting procedures (if “no” for previous question)? Thanks a bunch!

        1. Jiayu G2 has a 2050 mAh battery. When I always use the WiFi or play games, it lasts around 1 day. When I just use the phone for text messages, occasional internet use and some voice calls, it lasts around 2 days. It does not come pre-rooted. But I think Fastcardtech can root it if you request it. I have not searched for custom roms yet, but I’m sure they are available. Try searching some android forums for this.

I’ve seen that some one asked if JIAYU G2 supports hebrew and u’ve said “it may not support”
so my question is… Language isnt just part of the android os? i mean… if its not installed you can just download and install it or whatever. . . am i wrong?

    1. Hello Mike,
Yes you are right. Language is part of the Android OS. There are options in the language menu that I cannot decipher. One option is clearly for the Arabic language. And there are two options that look similar to the Arabic texts. Since I cannot understand the texts, I could not tell if it is the option for the Hebrew language. If Android 4.0 supports Hebrew language, then I guess Jiayu G2 supports Hebrew.

If it is not installed, you can download it from Google Market or from another site and install it on your phone. Sometimes Google Play tells you that an application is not compatible with your device. This usually is not accurate. If that happens, download it from another source and install the APK file. It should work fine.

        I’ve got another question…
Right now im looking for smartphone to buy, for around 200$..
        lets say 200$ – 230$..
And there are so many options im not sure what to buy.
I know i should look for 1G ram bec android itself takes around 400 mb,
dual core… don’t care too much about the camera,
        no need for dual sim…
so i thought maybe to wait for JUAYI G3… but it seems to be quite expensive.
maybe G2-s… do you have any more recommendations?

        1. I recommend Jiayu G3. It only costs $210 at Fastcardtech. I am very satisfied with Jiayu G2, so I believe its dual core successor, Jiayu G3, would be way much better.

            • Mike on July 23, 2012 at 3:01 pm

I dont really know or ever bought from this site, can i trust it? …
and im not sure i want this one because its just too big.
and i wasnt talking about G2 , i was talking about g2-s, very similar to the G3 but, smaller and its screen is not HD, what do you think? i just need to decide if the difference between 4 and 4.5 inch matters that much.

          1. Well, the G2s has similar specs to the G3 except that the G2s has a smaller 4.0-inch screen, a lower resolution of 960 x 540, and a lower resolution 0.3 megapixel front camera. These specs are still okay for me. I have a Jiayu G2 with a 4.0-inch, 800 x 480 pixel screen and I’m already satisfied with it. It would now depend on your preference.

As for Fastcardtech, I have bought several phones from them without any problems. Their prices are probably the lowest among the online shops that sell Chinese phones. I have recommended Fastcardtech to my friends who also purchased phones from their website. They all received their phones. Hence, I trust them.

Can a xiaomi mi-one cell phone purchased in hong kong work in the usa and also worldwide?. what should i look out for before purchasing one and what should the approximate cost be?
i ask because i read a nice article about the company which makes these phones. thanks

    1. Hi! First, you should check if the 3G frequencies supported by the phone is supported by your network carrier. GSM is not a problem since the phone is tri-band. 2G (GSM) will work with 900/1800/1900 MHz. But the phone only supports WCDMA 900/2100 MHz for 3G. Make sure your network operates under this frequency if you want to use 3G. The phone itself should cost around US$345. Shipping costs would depend on your location and the method you use. It should cost you $30-40 if you are from the USA. Xiaomi is really a good Chinese company. It is one of the hottest smartphone brands in China.

Regarding the Jiayu G3phone, I noted that your specification shows WCDMA frequency as a quad band. Most retailers specification show only WCDMA frequency as 900 and 2100. Can you clarify if the 850 frequency is part of this phone.

    1. Actually I’m not sure about the frequencies. I got it from a post on Jiayu G3. But now as I search the other online shops, I found out that they posted different frequencies. Others have it quad band WCDMA, others 850/2100, while certain shops have it 900/2100. So for now, I’m going to post it as quad band. When new information comes, I’ll update my post above.

What do know about this new mtk 6588 ??

    1. All I know is that it is still under development and it will use a better GPU, probably PowerVR SGX540 or better. It is a quad core CPU that could clock from 1.5-1.7 GHz. It may be released later this year or early 2013.

    Hallo Kris,
i would like to have an answer from you. I am learning a lot of things from your blog…but all chinese good phones as Jiayu g3 has dual sim? Do you know any good android 4.0 single sim?

    1. Hi Revo,
Jiayu G3 is dual sim. Other good dual sim phones include Newsmy Newman N1, Zopo ZP900, K-touch Bumblebee II V8, and some others. If you want a single sim phone, check out Xiaomi M2. It has excellent specs and features. It already has the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Thanks for visiting my site! Shipping would depend on what method you choose. Shipping to Indonesia via EMS would cost around $20 for 1 phone. I’m also thinking of buying Xiaomi M2. It will be available in October.

    Hi Kris,

I’m looking to get a cost effective smartphone as follows and hope you may help me out with a recommendation:

    – unlocked and usable with the 3 G sim card from my 7″ Galaxy Tablet (Bell Canada)
    – something fairly rugged (I’m not abusive though)
    – 5 inch screen (plus minus but at least 4.5 inch)
    – a great camera for pictures and video (possibly 8MP). I want to be able to take, edit and load quality pics and videos while on the go, onto my blog. (I gather using the available editing apps on Android should help accommodate this).
    – Zoom function for camera
    – flash for camera
    – good microphone, to complement the sound with the video (something with background noise suppression)
    – Android 4 (as I would think it offers the more advance features and possibilities)
    – Skype usable
    – WiFi, bluetooth etc
    – GPS
    – $200 US plus/minus

    1. Hi Andi,

Looking at your preferences, I think these phones will suit you: Jiayu G3, CarPad Note5 F6, Star N9880, HDC Galaxy Tad P1000+.

But first confirm with the seller and your telecom network whether the 3G frequencies of these phones match with your telecom’s. Otherwise, 3G won’t work. If I’m not mistaken, your network supports 850/1900 MHz for 3G.

      Best Regards

    Hello Kris,

Great website, Chinese phone are really getting interesting.

I need to buy a new phone and it seems to be the perfect time for it. I saw a lot of ads for the Galaxy 3 and almost fell for it, but then I looked on internet and found brand I didn’t really consider before like Meizu, Xiaomi, Huawei,…

I’d like to get something very nice (I was almost going to buy the SG3 so…) but I just can’t decide…

I might be forgetting something, so please enlighten me. I think Meizu and Huawei latest phone are not as good as Lenovo’s K860 or Xiaomi’s M2.

The M2 is not available yet (unless I take a contract with the less famous contractor in China (I live in Shenzhen)) and has a smaller screen (4.3). Those are the major setbacks for me.

The K860 has less RAM (in what kind of condition would that really change something? Game? Video?), the big screen will probably mean more battery consumption, it’s using Android ICS while Xiaomi is using the next version if I’m correct? I never used Android before, does that just mean that I need to update my software or will I be stuck with it? The camera might be a little bit less good than the M2’s?

Well I’m really not an expert and would really appreciate if you could give me some advice.

And last point, do you have any idea how a phone the M2 can have better hardware than the SG3 on paper, use the same software and be twice as cheap? I tried to get advice from friends, and (imo, mostly because they bought an Iphone or a SG3) a lot of them told me to stick to good brand blablabla…

    Thank you very much!

    1. Hi!

In my opinion, Xiaomi M2 is the best choice. It has more advanced specs than all the other phones you mentioned and the price is more affordable. If a bigger screen is a must for you, then you might want to consider Lenovo K860, but Xiaomi M2 has greater value than that. It already runs with the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean while Lenovo K860 runs with Android 4.0 ICS. We can’t know for sure if the K860 would receive a Jelly Bean update. It may be possible but you may also be stuck with ICS.

1 GB RAM is pretty much standard for android 4.x devices. 1 GB should be enough for intermediate smartphone use including 3D games. But more RAM should mean better performance in games, videos and multi-tasking. It translates to smoother navigation and overall performance. So a 2 GB RAM is definitely a huge plus for a phone. I believe Xiaomi M2 can provide you a better overall experience.

With regards to the cheap price Xiaomi is selling their devices, I am also amazed by it. They have done it before when they released their first phone, Xiaomi Mi1. Within days the phone was sold out in China. And I read a lot of good comments about the phone. It led me to believe the quality was not sacrificed for the price. I have also read that Xiaomi deliberately sold the phone at a low price to gain a foothold on the smartphone market. They were willing to absorb a few losses in order to gain huge profits in the future. I think that move paid off. And now they are releasing their second phone with pretty much the same strategy. With the success of their previous launches, it should mean they are doing something right.

Well, my friends also told me before to buy phones with famous brands only. I decided to go against the flow and buy a Chinese phone because I didn’t like the idea of paying a fortune for something that would become outdated in several months. To tell you the truth, I am very satisfied with it and amazingly, my friends got converted. Some have actually bought Chinese phones of their own.

It’s all about making the first move, that usually is the hardest part. Once you get to try the right Chinese phone, it would change the way you look at smartphones forever.

        Thanks :)

Your comment help me being patient and wait for the phone to be released… I’m using a very simple nokia (it barely have colors xD) until I buy my new phone and it’s hard to wait!

What about the Voice recognition assistant (the Android’s Siri), I saw that with Jelly Bean there will be one, and that Xiaomi will have it in Chinese, but can we install it in other languages? At least in English ^^?

        1. It has other languages with it. Android 4.x supports multi languages. I believe you can install an English version of the Android Siri. It has been installed in some Chinese clone phones before.

I’m thinking of getting one for myself too. Well, it should be worth the wait.

i am searching for a 1g ram mtk6577 phone for cheap any ideas ??

    1. It has specs similar to Newsmy Newman N1, which is good. However, Freelander I10 is more expensive. Some shops sell it at $189. Newsmy Newman N1 costs only $149.99 at Fastcardtech.

i like the HDC samsung like phones
do you recommend the best 1g ram mtk6577 phones ?

    1. I agree, Newsmy is not yet in stock. So that phone may be a good alternative. Right now, I don’t know if there are any HDC Galaxy phones that have 1 GB RAM. Most of them only have 512 MB RAM. Jiayu G3 would be a great choice, it is scheduled to be released this month. Check out also Goophone I5. It has quad core Tegra 3 CPU, 1 GB RAM, retina screen and it looks like the new iPhone 5.

    bonjour Kris

Selon certaines sources, Newman a GorillaGlass N1.

Thanks Kris for the info. I looked at all of your suggestions.
About the X710D: What is EVO difference between EVO and non EVO? Different web sites state different screen pixels and WIFI specs for it.
About HDC Galaxy note 2: Is screen 5.4 or really 5.3?
Since you have had hands on experience with these 4 phones, which one would you pick?

            • Kris Amora on September 27, 2012 at 6:52 pm

Hi! I believe Haipai X710D has only one version. Evo may just be a tag to give it a better sounding name. It has a screen resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Actually, I have only tried using HDC Galaxy Note i9220 MTK6577, which is identical to Haipai X710D. Navigation is fast, as well as internet browsing. Camera pictures taken by its back camera is clear. It also has a big capacity battery which lasts around 2-3 days with light to moderate use. Overall, it has great value for its price.

HDC Galaxy Note 2 has the best screen resolution among the phones mentioned. It is QHD 960 x 540 pixels and it is listed as having 5.4 inch screen. On paper, it has the best specs among them all. So, judging on their specs, I would pick HDC Galaxy Note 2.

But don’t expect it to be at the level of the original Galaxy Note. Battery life is good. The 2800 mAh battery could last 2-3 days with moderate use. Pictures are clear with the 8.0 megapixel rear camera. Overall, it’s great value for its price.

Hi Kris, I love the site and appreciate your efforts!

I’m in the market for a new phone and want to run it on Walmart’s straight Talk network (using 3G ATT 850 and 1900khz). i’m looking for a good dual core phone that supports 3G. All these phones say 2G GSM, but I read some do 3G GSM. Is there anything out there for me? (under $250)?

    Many thanks!

    1. Hello! Thanks for the compliment! There are a lot of Chinese phones that support 3G and GSM. You can start by looking at my list of dual core phones featured in my website. To view the list, click here. But choose only phones that support your 3G frequencies 850/1900 MHz.

The Xiomi 1s looks about right. It says 3G WDCMA 850 and 1900khz, but only lists 2G GSM and my provider uses 3G GSM 850 and 1900khz. Will this phone work for me?

        1. I think when you say GSM it means 2G. Maybe your provider has a different way of defining the frequencies. I always thought that GSM, EDGE, GPRS are 2G and WCDMA, CDMA, UMTS, HSPA are 3G.

Kris, you listed a few elsewhere, but none of the phones specifically said 3G 850 71900khz, they either said GSM 850 &1900khz or 2G 850 & 1900. S I’m confused as none of the 50 or so phones I’ve looked at actually secifcally say what I’m looking for. What should thephone stats say?

    Thabks for the quick reply.

Sorry, I just reread this and realized it doesn’t make a ton of sense.

I’m trying to use a carrier that provides 3G @ 850 and 1900khz. The carrier says it doesn’t support CDMA devices, but this is where the confusion comes in.

All these dual sim phones list
2G GSM and all the available frequencies
3G WCDMA and all the frequencies.

I’m concerned if I order a phone that reads 3G WCDMA 850 and 1900khz, that it wont work. I’d really like to support and end up with a great phone, but I’m afraid I pay $200, wait 3 weeks for delivery, then find out it won’t work.

      Thanks for your thoughts

Also, do most of these phones come w/ English Android or Chinese?

      1. If the phone has a 3G frequency of WCDMA 850/1900 MHz, I believe it would work with your network. As to your carrier, I think they are referring to CDMA, which is different from WCDMA. If they say that CDMA is not compatible, then WCDMA should work. Well, just do more research on this. Ask again your carrier if WCDMA will work. These phones come with English Android. Just ask the seller to set it to English language first before they ship it to you.

    Hello Kris,
I want to purchase a good android phone
I went to your blog and have found 2 phones to be very good
One is JIAYU G3 and other one is ZOPPO ZP900
Can you tell me which is the best phone from these two
Pros and Cons of one over the other

    1. Hi Veronica,
Based on the specs of the two phones, they are almost even. It would now depend on your preferences on the screen resolution, size of the screen, battery capacity and physical appearance. Jiayu G3 is 4.5-inch while ZOPO ZP900 is 5.3 inches. Jiayu G3 will have a much clearer display since it has a higher resolution and a smaller screen, thus higher pixels per inch (ppi). Jiayu G3 also has the advantage of larger capacity battery. For the looks, I favor the G3 over the ZP900.

However, the only major advantage ZP900 has is that it is in stock while Jiayu G3 is yet to be released in the market.

    Hi Kris,

Congratulations and thanks for a wonderful blog full of informed and impartial advice. I only wish I had found you before buying my Star N8000 back in August. Not that I have any regrets about my purchase from Amazon/Dracotek for £115.95. The phone arrived at my home in France by DHL within a week.but the courrier demanded 15 euros tva/vat before she would hand it over. Obviously, I had to pay but after complaining to Amazon I was refunded within hours of my email. My point here is when buying a chinese phone online check carefully the conditions of sale. All too often, Chinese sites state that import duties and taxes are the responsibilty of the buyer and this could add a sizeable amount to the bill.

Regarding the Star N8000, I am delighted with it and can recommend to anyone looking for a quality budget smartphone running an Android 4 ICS operating system that compliments the hardware specs perfectly. Build quality is faultless and spare parts (screen, battery etc) are readily available if needed.

    1. Hello Brian,

Thanks for sharing your experience on your phone! Import duties may be a problem in certain countries. In my own experience with Fastcardtech, they declared my packages as gifts and with low values. As a result, all my packages were not taxed at all. This is one advantage if you are buying from this shop as compared to Amazon. I believe Amazon declares the real value of a package, hence the probability of high customs tax.

    Hi Kris,

Buying a China phone sound like a very good idea. But one concern I have is that are these phones going to work with my American sim-card? Phones such as Huawei U8825D is developed for European market and Lenovo A789 is developed for Chinese market. Are they going to work with my T-Mobile 3G simcard?

    1. Hi Derek! GSM will work in America since most China phones are quad band. But you need to check first the 3G frequencies of your network. China phones usually support WCDMA 850/2100, 900/2100, 850/1900/2100 MHz. Make sure it matches with your network. Otherwise, you won’t have 3G access.

    Hello Kris,

I trust that you are all well.I want to ask your opinion on something. I have been researching your website for a couple of weeks, and I want to import chinese phones to the middle east for distribution.

The brands I am looking at are Zopo, THL and OPPO. Are these brands good, do they manufacture good quality phones? Do the Android ROMs get any updates? Do they have after-sale service? Google Play Store? spare batteries?…
I noticed that you mentioned in this section that mobile barn corp is the manufacturer of Zopo and THL mobiles, is mobile barn the official manufacturer, if yes, how come mobile barn website doesn’t have all the models?

If there are any other brands that you recommend for me, please feel free to let me know and please supply me with the official website.

Thank you advance for your time and help.

    Best Regards,

    1. Hi! Those three phone brands you mentioned have good after-sales service, including spare batteries and updates. Google Play Store compatibility may not be as good as the mainstream brands but you can still install Play Store incompatible apps through File Manager. But among the three, I believe OPPO is the best choice.

I am not so sure about Mobile Barn. Maybe it is just a distributor. I don’t have much info about Zopo and THL’s manufacturer. I also recommend Jiayu (, Lenovo (, Huawei (, and ZTE (

Blickwinkelstabilität is one of the best I found in the shops in China. The camera is very good also in the dark 8MP is still enought for me. For more pixels you only need so much memory. The housing quality is plastic and still OK.

Other Meizu phones that are available as of now are: Meizu MX2, Meizu MX Quad-Core RE, Meizu MX Quad-Core, Meizu MX, and Meizu M9.

As for Lenovo, the following phones have built-in call recording: Lenovo P700 and Lenovo P700i. Probably other Lenovo phones also have this feature also but I’m not sure which ones have it.

For Xiaomi, its latest phones have native call recording: Xiaomi Mi2S, Xiaomi Mi2A, and the upcoming Xiaomi Mi3.

Other phone brands may also have call recording function but those I’ve mentioned above are the ones that I know of as of now.

    Dear Sir,

I bought a mtk6589 note 2. After having a “factory data reset”, it stops with showing all the id’s (names) of the incoming calls. What can I do to get to see these names (which are registered in gmail) when a I receive incoming calls?

    Thank you,

    Runtah Basura

    1. Hi! Performing a Factory Data Reset also deletes the contacts you saved on your phone’s memory. You might have to copy your contacts again to your phone.

in a video from a spain boy, and he recomended this phone, for the camera, and is a good celphone.. but i trust in you, is that true? or are the other cell with good camera and all of this? the Samsung S4? is best?
    Thank you..

    1. Hi! Honestly, I cannot give you a definite answer for which phone has the best camera. Most phones with the quad core MT6589 CPU have 13 megapixels rear camera. Star X920 Butterfly is one of these quad core phones with very good cameras. Personally, I would go for more popular China smartphones like Jiayu G4 or Umi X2, although they are more expensive than Star X920. But if you are on a tight budget, Star X920 has great value for your money. You may also like to check out this exact Galaxy S4 clone with Gesture Control: HDC Galaxy S4 Legend.

Hello, I have a jiayu G2 phone and don’t know how to transfer my photo and videos to my computer. Please help!! Many thanks

    1. Hi! You can use either bluetooth or USB cable. If you use bluetooth, turn on the bluetooth of both phone and computer and make sure they are discoverable. Then pair the two. You can now go to file manager and go to the folder of your photos and videos. Select the files you want to transfer by clicking the icon that looks like a pencil at the bottom of the screen then check the box at the right of the file. Then click the icon at the bottom of the screen that looks like three dots forming a vertical line. Click “Share” then “Bluetooth”. You can also go to “Gallery” and select the pictures or videos you want to share. You can see the bluetooth icon above the screen when you view a picture.

If you use the USB cable, just use it as if you are copying files from your USB to your computer. When you connect the phone to the computer via USB cable, go to the dropdown menu and tap USB mode.

    Hi Kris!
I’m very happy to have found your great site! I would be very thankful for some help.

I’m searching after a mobil at least as good as my iPhone 3gs, but with dual sim.
It would be great if it’s menus are similar to iPhones.

    I need the following…

    1) That both sim-cards can be active at the same time?
    2) Read and send e-mail?
    3) Be able to surf at Internet by using wifi
    4) Be able to share my Internet connecion.
    5) Be able to use Skype
    6) Record voice memos?
    7) Use apps?
    8) Use gps?
    9) Watch Youtube clips?
    10) Easily save back-ups, on iCloud or similar.
    11) Hopefully use the swedish letters å, ä and ö.
    12) Hopefully a brand that can be sent to reparation if something breaks.
    13) Hopefully syncronise the phone with my back-up from iCloud/iTunes.

    Kind regards,
    Alexandra (from Sweden).

    1. Hello! There are a lot of iPhone clones that meet most of your descriptions above. But a few things, like iTunes, is not compatible with these phones since iTunes is exclusive for original Apple iPhones only. These clones only run in Android which is customized to look and feel like an iPhone. Anyway, if you want to give it a shot, I recommend the single sim ZoPhone i5 Pro. But if dual sim is a must, then I recommend a slightly earlier but good model, Tooky t86.

        10) Is it possible to save back-ups with Tooky t86?
        11) Is it possible to download key board with the swedish letter å, ä and ö?
        12) If something breaks, where can I send Tooky t86 to get it fixed?
        13) Is it possible to convert my contacts to Tooky t86?

        Kind regards,

    Hi Kris

    I need some advice:

I am looking for a phone with
    – a reasonable camera (and also has facecam)
    – Trustworthy GPS
    – Good battery
    – Dual sim
    – Screen size max 4,7″ (unless it’s a small 5″ )
    – Gorilla glass is a bonus

I am not a gamer – I surf, call, mail and use gps a lot.

First I wanted to go for Jiayu 4G but the GPS isn’t very good.
I am interested in Lenovo S750 or the P780 but don’t know anything about these phones.

Any other Lenovo phones or other brands that could do the trick?

    1. Hello! Phones from bigger companies like Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi and Meizu would have good GPS. Try looking at these phones:
      Lenovo S686
      Huawei Shine G500 Pro

    Hi Kris:

I’ve been looking for a Chinese cell phone for a while now, since I drew the same conclusions you did. However I’ve noticed that the North American market has been quite neglected by the Chinese manufactures as is quite difficult to find a DUAL SIM cell phone with 3G frequencies in the 850/1900. Do you have any recommendations?

    1. Hi! Most Chinese smartphones are deigned to work with networks in China and Hong Kong. These networks support WCDMA 850, 900, and 2100 MHz only. This explains why you can barely see China phones with WCDMA 1700 or 1900 MHz. There are a few phones from bigger companies that support these bands, like some Huawei, Xiaomi, and Lenovo phones but most are single SIM only. And they are either triband or pentaband 3G.

You can view these phones that may work on your carrier’s 3G bands by clicking below:

which one better between JIAYU G4 and Zopo C2 Platinum ?

    1. Hi! It would depend on your preferences. I will compare Jiayu G4T and Zopo C2 Platinum since G4T is the latest version of Jiayu G4 with MT6589T 1.5GHz CPU. The main differences I see are 4.7-inch screen, HD 1280x720p resolution, 3G WCDMA 2100, and 3000mAh battery for Jiayu G4T vs. 5.0-inch screen, FHD 1920x1080p resolution, 3G WCDMA 850/2100, and 2000mAh battery for Zopo C2 Platinum. Hi Kriss! Your website is amazing, just what I need right now!
I recently sent you an email but just in case, I leave you a comment here.
I want to aquire a chinese mobile phone because their high specs for a low price. But I have my doubts:
    – Will I have connection problems with 3G, etc? (I am from Spain).
    – Is the Android SO fully original?
    – What about other known problems like overheating, battery life…?
    – Any problems with payment, shipping, returns…?
    – Material quality? I wouldn’t like that my phone breaks up at the first time it meets the floor.
I want to make a investmen about 250€ and get the best specs possible, but I need to be sure about what I’m doing with that money. So here it comes the minimum requirements that I’m looking for:
    – Quad Core 1.5GHz.
    – 1 GB RAM.
    – 8 GB ROM (if it’s 8 or less I need it to support microSD).
    – FullHD (1280×720).
    – No more than 5″ (less if it’s possible).
    – Good camera/flash quality (it’s not very important but I don’t have any camera).
From that, I want (obviously) the best that I could get for no more than a Xiaomi Mi2S (about 275€). You know all the market infinitely better than me and that’s why I’m asking for your help :D. So if you could recommend me a few models with the best specs within that price, I will be thankful for you until my future chinese phone dies :D.
    Thank you so much!
    Keep the hard work!

    1. Hello! Thanks for visiting my site! I will try to answer your questions as accurately as possible:
      – Determine first the 3G frequency bands of your network. If you buy a phone that is not compatible with your network’s 3G, you will only get EDGE (2G speeds) when you connect to the internet. For Spain, the telecoms Orange, Movistar, and Vodafone operate with WCDMA 900/2100MHz while Yoigo uses WCDMA 2100MHz. Please confirm it with your carrier. So choose a phone that matches your network’s frequency bands. This should be the first thing you need to consider when choosing a phone. Click on the links below to view possible matches with your network’s 3G bands:
      WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100 phones
      WCDMA 900/1900/2100 phones
      WCDMA 900/1700/2100 phone
      WCDMA 900/2100 phones
      WCDMA 900/2100 phones
      WCDMA 2100 phones

      – Android of Chinese phones is fully original, since Android is free-license.
      – Overheating is not a problem for Chinese phones especially with MediaTek processors. Battery life will depend on the capacity of the battery and the size of the screen. The bigger the battery, the better. The smaller the screen size, the longer the battery lasts. The only problem I see with some Chinese phones is that the GPS takes some time to fix on your location. But this is solved easily by doing some tweaks on the software. You can search it on Google.
      – There are no problems with payment, you can pay via Paypal, Western Union or MoneyGram, or bank transfer. As with shipping, it depends on your country’s customs. But many buyers from Spain have successfully received their packages so I guess that won’t be a problem. For returns, there is a 1 year warranty but you will have to pay for shipping a defective unit to China.
      – Some phones are really durable, so choose the better Chinese brands like Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi, Meizu, Jiayu, ZTE, and other known brands.

It’s really difficult to suggest a phone because there are a lot that will fit with your description. Just consider first your network’s 3G bands and make this as your basis for choosing a phone. My personal picks are Meizu MX2, Xiaomi Mi2S, Jiayu G4T, Jiayu G3T, Zopo C3, Zopo ZP980+, ThL W11 Monkey King, and NEO N003, and all these phones’ 3G operate well all over Spain if your network has WCDMA 2100MHz. If your carrier has WCDMA 900/2100MHz, there may be some areas in your country that your phone will get 2G speeds only.

I hope this helps. Good luck choosing your next phone!

Wow! Thank you for your quick answer!

I’m using a telecom called ONO, which seems to use the Movistar’s network (WCDMA 900/2100 MHz). So I need a phone compatible with 900/2100? That means that I can use a phone with (for example) WCDMA 900/1900/2100 MHz but not one with WCDMA 2100 MHz? As you can see I don’t know much about this topic :D.

Thank you for all the answers, now I have my eyes opened and my doubts are solved. I’m convinced of buying a chinese phone.

Right now I just need to decide which one! So now that you know my 3G band…any different recommendation?!
        Thank you so much again!

        1. Hi! Your network uses both WCDMA 900 and 2100 MHz. There will be places in your country that your network will use WCDMA 900 and other areas with WCDMA 2100. You can still use a phone with WCDMA 2100 MHz but there will be some areas in your country wherein you cannot have a 3G connection, and only 2G (GSM) will be used. To make sure you get the widest 3G coverage, get a phone with both WCDMA 900 and 2100. Hence, find phones with WCDMA 900/2100 MHz or more bands for support with other networks or for international use.

I’ll try to see which phones are suitable for you… Try looking at these phones: Huawei Ascend G700-U00, Xiaomi Mi2A, and the phones in this category: HSDPA 850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz Phones. They are compatible with your network’s 3G and they are all good brands.

    Hi Kris,
I bought a HDC Galaxy S4 Spark from FastCardTech. One of the battery got drained while I was testing it and it stopped working. With the second battery I was very careful and as soon it would get less, I would start charging it. Today it got drained because I had gone away and now it wont work and the phone screen is black. Only the red Led light is on. If I try to put it on, the screen becomes blue but the red light goes off, and then the blue screen becomes black again.
    What shall I do?
Will the Samsung original battery for Galaxy S4 work with this chinese phone? If not will the chinese bigger battery work with this phone? The battery sent with it are of 2600 strength. But it gets drained too quickly.
If original Samsung battery will not work with it, where will I get chinese batteries and quickly.
    Thank you

    1. Hello! That’s a shame to know you had problems with your battery. Try charging your phone again for a couple of hours and try turning it on. Sometimes you just need to charge it fully. Try also to consult your local phone repair shop, maybe they have a simple solution to your battery problem. But if the batteries are indeed defective, you can order batteries from Fastcardtech if you want. The original Samsung Galaxy S4 battery is also 2600 mAh but I’m not sure if it will be compatible with HDC Galaxy S4 Spark. Try to see if they are indeed the same.

    Hi Kris,
I found your blog very interesting and I’m spending a lot of time trying to find the right phone for me.

Right now I have a Star b6000 and I want to change it because my mother wants a big phone so I’ll give her mine (with a theme with big font so she can see better).

Maybe you can help me with your experience: I need a phone that has power enought to last one day always connected (3g or wifi), with a good memory (at least 16gb), good cpu and maybe but not mandatory NFC. I think Huawei ascend p2, d2 and oppo find 5 are great phones, but every phone have something that the other does not have… Like great battery but lack of NFC or LTE. In your opinion what it’s the best phone to buy right now?

Thank you very much, Diego from Switzerland.

    1. Hello Diego,
Thanks for visiting mg site! I agree, I guess you really can’t have it all. Just try to list some features that you think are absolutely necessary for you and look for a phone that has them all. I would recommend Xiaomi Mi3 which is about to be launched very soon but it is next to impossible to get one this early since supply is limited. Xiaomi phones are always sold out in China. Try looking at these phones: Meizu MX3, Jiayu S1, Huawei Ascend P6…

Well done! I would suggest to add one more category for easier search, namely by capacity of a battery. Now there are many models with the higher capacity batteries, even with the optional ones, and there are many people which prefer the better battery over the quality of front camera.

    1. Hello! Thank you for your suggestion! It is a good idea. I will certainly work on that soon.

I could not find on your website brand FAEA (or the model F1 or F2 and F2S). Any particular reason? What does it say about this brand and models?
    thank you

    1. Hi! I have featured the FAEA F2S. I believe it is a great phone, especially that it already has the upgraded quad core MT6589T CPU. You can see it here: FAEA F2S (FAEA F2 Elite).

Hey I am looking for phones to sell here in Canada, we use 3g: 850/1900 or 1700/2100 (wind and mobilicity I believe). Also LTE 1700/2600…

I saw your categories for 3g phones but is that it? Only a few select models… What about LTE??

I am planning on buying a bunch and selling them here as alternatives to the insanely expensive phones currently on the market…

    1. Hi! Only a few phones from China support those 3G frequencies you mentioned. Most of those phones are in the high-end category. Currently, there are no LTE capable China phones since China telecoms do not support LTE yet.

hello, I want to buy a good smartphone that has a good price too.
    and has some features as:
    Screen-4.5 to 5.0 inches
    -a good camera
    google-play that has installed.
    -that is 3g.
-that is dual sim. and other specifications.
found CUBOT P9, what do you think? This device is good? you know him, or it could indicate another with similar characteristics and the same price range.
I am waiting for your reply as soon as possible so that I can make my request by FASTCARDTECH OR Tinydeal.
    Thank you.

    1. Hello! Cubot P9 is a good budget phone but it only has 512MB RAM. You might find the RAM too small for some applications that need more RAM like games. You can try looking at these 1GB RAM phones:
      Jiayu G3T
      Pomp W89
      ZTE V967S
      Haipai A9500

    Thanks Kris in advance.

    1. Hello! I have not heard of any issues with Lenovo A850. In fact, I have read some good reviews about the phone. I’m not sure why the phone’s price has decreased. Maybe it’s just a marketing strategy by Lenovo.

Hi Kris. Enjoy your web site a lot. I was wondering thought if you can recommend a phone that might work in both Canada and Japan. If not, would you know of a phone that will work just in Japan?

    Here is Canadian network info:

    2G capabilities
    GSM 850, GSM 1900
    3G capabilities
    UMTS 850, UMTS 1700, UMTS 1900, UMTS 2100
    4G capabilities
    LTE 1700, LTE 2100, LTE 2600

I think Japan is also UMTS.

    Thanks very much.

    1. Hello! Right now, there are no China smartphones that support 4G LTE. They only support 2G GSM and 3G UMTS. If you want a phone that works with 3G in both Canada and Japan, try choosing phones with 3G frequencies of UMTS/WCDMA 850/2100MHz. Try looking at the phones on this category: WCDMA 850/2100MHz

I´m looking for a phone (3g 900/2100) with a realy good screen and connection.
I´m looking at the galaxy s4 orochi. Is the octa core worth it?
I realy like the TCL Idol X S950 to.
is there in your opinion a better phone in that pricerange,

    1. Hi! HDC Galaxy S4 Orochi is not yet available and I don’t know yet how it will perform. Its octa core processor looks very promising though. In my opinion, since the phone and its processor is relatively new, I think we should wait until the phone becomes more stable. TCL is a good established brand. The Idol X S950 has great specs and TCL has good after-sales support for its products.

It is a bit bigger then the “regular” phones but it is the rose between the thorns.
It is fast, it is clever, i found features that i never found in any other phone before,
Friends said to me “it wan’t last long” and i say better the best for shot then second grade for long” besides i bilןeve it will last long/

    1. Hi Amira! Thanks for the compliment and congratulations on your phone! I believe you got yourself a “best buy” with all the features of a high-end phone without the high price. There are many more Chinese phones that are very competitive and I wish the whole world will know about them. Slowly people are realizing that they are comparable to the popular smartphone brands.

However my budget is in the same price range as the one mentioned and I’d like a great phone with 5″ screen. Do you have any suggestions?

    1. Hi! I don’t think they are fake. The testing apps like CPU-Z are just third party apps and they are not always accurate. There are fake Chinese phones but they usually are clones of iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phones. I have not heard of a fake Haier W910.

What the different, if the phone “Dual sim Active”?
What do you think about ZOPO ZP998?
Somewhere I can read, that come with Gorolla Glass. What the true?

    1. Hello! Dual SIM standby means the two SIM cards that you insert on your phone will work at the same time. However, when a person calls you on your SIM 1 while you are talking to another person on SIM 2, the caller on SIM 1 hears a “busy” tone. Dual Active, on the other hand, can receive both calls at the same time. You can answer both calls by using the call waiting feature.

ZOPO ZP998 is a great phone with an Octa core CPU. It has Gorilla Glass.

The phones have a 1 year warranty so if there are defects, you can send it back to the seller for repair or replacement. I do not know if they have a service center in Greece. You can pay by credit card but it must be via Paypal. You can also pay by Western Union, Moneygram, or bank transfer. Shipment to Greece is free by registered airmail which may take around 30 days or US$30 by EMS which could take around 2 or 3 weeks.

As for customs, I think you will have to pay some amount according to your country’s policy. To minimize this cost, you can request the seller to declare your package with a low value. I do not know if there are any resellers in Europe.

hey Kris, great website, i will be going to china on Oct13 and i was wonderting which would be the top of the line phone that would be available at the time. is there a better phone than the Mi4? thats the only phone i have hears is really good from my friends here in canada

    1. Hi! Xiaomi Mi4 probably is the most anticipated phone in China today. Other top of the line phones are Meizu MX4, Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro, ZTE Nubia Z7 Max, Vivo Xshot Ultimate, Huawei Ascend P7, Oppo Find 7, and OnePlus One.

      1. thanks you for your reply!
i took a look at the phones you suggested and i really like the lenovo. Vibe Z2 Pro.
when i compared the lenovoVibe Z2 Pro with the Mi4 i saw only minor differences:
screen resolutions 50ppi difference ( not a big difference)
back camera 3 megapixel difference for the lenovo (
front camera 3 megapixels difference for the Mi4 (dont really care about the front camera much)
Mi4 has Corning gorilla glass 3

i have never seen or touch the corning gorilla glass3, so far that would be my only specification that would make me want to go for the Mi4 instead of the Lenovo. is it that great as the reviews says so, or is it not that big of a difference?

Jiayu G4C and Cubot S200 have generally standard cameras but I do not know if they would serve your purpose being a photo and video hobbyist. However, you can download photo and video apps from Google Play Store. They can greatly enhance your photos and videos. Anyway, you may also want to check out Elephone G2, which costs below $100.
