Lenovo A60 Review

Lenovo A60 was the first Android phone to use MediaTek’s MT6573 chip. Mediatek is known to produce low cost, highly efficient processors in the market. Lenovo provided the price-conscious consumers a powerful entry level smartphone with a friendly price tag. Let’s review the A60…

Appearance
A60’s body design is elegant. It has rounded edges with metallic silver lining. It has 3 physical buttons in front. The body is made of high quality plastic which makes the phone lightweight. At the back is a non-slip material which is shaped ergonomically to fit the hands, and resists against fingerprints. The 3.2 megapixel back camera is lined with a silver border and beside it are the phone’s speakers. The volume control and the camera buttons are placed on the left side. Located on the upper side are the power button, microUSB port, and 3.5 mm audio port. The right side of the body does not have any buttons or ports.

Network
Lenovo A60 is dual SIM dual standby, two SIM card slots stacked design. The phone can receive text messages from both SIMs at the same time. Whenever a call is received at one SIM and another call is incoming on the other SIM, the second caller would hear a busy tone. The GSM card is placed above while another GSM or WCDMA card is placed below. The battery blocks the microSD card slot, meaning it is not hot-swappable. The phone must be turned off first in order to remove or replace the microSD card.

Chipset Performance
The phone adopts the MT6573 processor 650 MHz, the ROM is 512MB and the RAM is 256MB. The RAM is small but you can run 3 applications simultaneously in this phone without lags. When compared to Android phones running on Qualcomm 800 MHz, the A60 runs applications much faster. This has something to do with MediaTek’s technology combining the MT6573 CPU and its GPU to run applications like a dual core processor. You may install apps like Link2SD and App 2 SD to save some RAM and improve the phone’s performance. Link2SD is an application that can uninstall, freeze/unfreeze, and move applications from internal memory to SD card (and vice-versa). App 2 SD helps you move apps to either external or internal storage through the system settings.

User Interface (UI)
The A60 has a custom user interface. All icons are rounded, and even user-installed third-party applications will have round icons. The UI utilizes black and yellow-green color, giving a dynamic feel. The screen lock interface is typical of the native Android with modifications in some details. The phone has a drop-down notification bar interface.

Dual Card Management
Lenovo A60 has a WCDMA and GSM dual network dual standby function. Management of dual SIM cards is easy. Once the new card is inserted, the system will automatically boot prompt. For data cards, just switch down on the notification bar and select.

Camera

The 3.2 megapixel back camera is Fixed Focus, with no flash.  There is a capture button at the left side of the body. Photos taken by the back camera is good during daytime. But due to the lack of a flash, images taken at night or at dim places are not very clear. Support features on the camera include effects, white balance, face/smile detection, panorama, night mode, geo tagging, and multi shot. For the front camera, the resolution is VGA (640×480 pixels). Lenovo A60 can also do video recording function.

Audio Music
Lenovo A60 only supports equalizer settings, but adopts a various sound settings. It supports many audio formats like MP3 , AAC , WAV, and WMA.

Lenovo A60 Back

Video
The video playback of the A60 supports 720 x 480 resolution MP4 video playback, as well as AVI , FLV, 3GP, MOV, ASF, MPEG, RMVB and other formats. There are no dropped frames during playback and the colors look balanced. The whole process of playing videos is very smooth.

FM Radio
Many smart phones do not have FM radio. But the A60 has this feature. You only need to plug in the headphones for it to work. The phone also supports RDS digital broadcasting system.

Backup
Built-in backup tools in the A60 can help users to back up almost all the useful content (including contacts, SMS, applications) to the SD card, eliminating the hassles of changing new sim cards.

Battery
The 1500mAh capacity battery lasts around 3 days with minimal use of applications. With heavy usage of WiFi, bluetooth, and apps like games, the battery lasts around 1-2 days.

Price
Now this is the deciding factor. With all those specifications mentioned above, the Lenovo A60 costs only around US$138! Of course if you want additional software, bigger capacity microSD card, or rooting, you have to pay additional fees. But still, its great value for your money.

Summary
With its incredible low price, coupled with dual SIM card capabilities, efficient performance of the MT6573 chip and Android 2.3.3, Lenovo A60 has claimed its reputation as the phone to beat among entry level smartphones.

Pros:

Very affordable.
Dual SIM card WCDMA and GSM dual standby.

I just purchased a Lenovo A60 mobile phone today and find it a very exciting phone even for an entry level anrdoid phone. The phone is greater than the price you have to pay for. Its like reverse marketing. If you want the best, pay less.

    1. I agree with you. This is one of the best value phones ever marketed. Really a cost-effective phone. Great specs without the high price.

Hi Kris, thanks for your reply. But why is it that Viber is not functioning properly? I’ve read from dfferent sources that viber is compatible with this phone.

    1. Try re-installing Viber. Maybe it was not installed properly. Or try rooting your phone. You can search for the steps in rooting the Lenovo A60 on the internet. If you are from the Philippines, you can also visit this forum about rooting Lenovo A60: http://www.symbianize.com/showthread.php?s=8468676d3948a8b14aa08622decb6e0d&t=592301.

    1. Hello! You can only update it to Android 2.3.6. It cannot be upgraded to Android 4.0 because it has insufficient RAM.

Since i believe lot of people have purchased it already, can i have an honest advise and opinion bout this phone
    thNks…:-)

    1. Lenovo is a famous brand and it is one of the better Chinese phones. Although Lenovo A60 is good, it is already outdated. There are a lot of dual core phones that are available now. Check out Lenovo A789. It is already dual core and it is affordable.
