MediaTeK to release MT6577 Dual Core processor

MediaTeKMediaTeK announced that the MT6577, a dual core Cortex A9 CPU, will be released soon and phones carrying this chipset will be launched in China as early as July this year. MediaTeK has been known to produce low-cost, high-efficiency chipsets.

The semi-conductor company MediaTeK is responsible for the flourishing of the low-cost Chinese smartphones in the market. It is the company that launched the MT6573 processor which has a frequency of 650Mhz. This created a revolution in the smartphone era. The affordable MT6573 had greater efficiency compared to other CPU models with the same frequency. It even surpasses the performance of Qualcomm’s 800 MHz processors. This led to the mass production of sub-$200 dual SIM smartphones with the Android 2.3 operating system. Cheap smartphones with features like capacitive multi-touch screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Gravity Sensor and support for 3D games went on to be produced for the Chinese market.

After the success of MT6573, MediaTeK released the MT6575 which is a 1Ghz Cortex A9 processor which supports the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). It further improved the performance of the sub-$200 dual SIM Android phones. MT6575 also supports HD playback (720p), 8-megapixel camera, qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels) and 3D display. The MT6575 beats out Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM7227A chipset, which is also 1 GHz, in many third-party benchmarks.

With the announcement of the MT6577, MediaTeK claims it easily outperforms Qualcomm’s dual core CPU Snapdragon MSM8255. If this is true, it would be the advent of cheap dual core Android smartphones! With the MT6577, consumers are now provided with more practical options with respect to dual core smartphones.

What MediaTek really needs is to use a more current CPU/GPU silicon.

The Single Core Cortex-A9/SGX531 combo is waaay long in the tooth for 2012 media requirements and beyond.

Give potential customers *at least* a Quad Core Cortex-A9 / Dual Core Cortex-A15 *plus* Quad Core SGX543 (SGX543MP4), at affordable bulk/high volume prices, and MediaTel will make a killing.

Hey, it’s China, they can do it.

    1. I agree with you. The SGX531 needs a replacement already. Mediatek is working on a new CPU called the MT6577 which is dual core. But I’m sure they will be releasing a much better CPU/GPU combination in the near future.
