Just a few months after the launch of its first dual core CPU, MT6577, MediaTeK announced that it would release its own quad core chipset, MT6588, in early 2013. Along with it, a more advanced dual core CPU, MT6583, would also be launched. It is speculated that both processors could handle speeds of 1.5-1.7 GHz and would now be using the PowerVR SGX 544 GPU. The quad core MT6588 also packs some muscle, able to handle WXGA graphics (1280 x 800 pixels), 1080p 30fps video decoding and encoding, and 13 megapixel camera.
Meanwhile, the dual core MT6583 CPU is designed for low-to-mid-range smartphones. It will support FWVGA resolution (854 x 480 pixels), 720p 30fps video playback and recording and 8 megapixel camera.
With this announcement of MediaTeK quad core chipsets, consumers are now provided with cheaper options for high end smartphones. While NVIDIA and Qualcomm are probably the industry’s leading brands, there is no doubt that MediaTek is within striking distance.
